Vice President JD Vance faced more questions about his relationship with Tucker Carlson in a recent interview with Sean Spicer. You can read the relevant exchange below:

SPICER: The last thing I wanted to ask you is, when I announced yesterday that I was coming to see you, the number one question I got was ask him about his relationship with Tucker Carlson. I think the way I want to ask it is this: I think it’s extremely admirable your loyalty to friends and family, it’s something I try to live by everyday. I don’t go out and criticize anyone in this administration, even when I think they’re… That’s just not how I think you should live your life. If someone’s a friend of yours, be a friend. But at what point do you find that because of your position as Vice President, you’ve maybe got to call some balls and strikes about anybody, don’t make it specific to tucker or anybody. At what point do you say: ‘Hey, they’re a friend, I appreciate my relationship, but what they’re saying here is not something that’s consistent with my values.’

VANCE: I think you have to do that all the time. And I’ve done that with Tucker I've done that with any number of people. Let me just give you a concrete example: So Tucker obviously one of the reasons he’s very very angry is over the Iran War. He does not like the Iran War. He and I have had that conversation in private, in public, I know how he feels, and I understand.

What I’ve said to Tucker is ‘Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. I’m not going to convince you on the Iran War one way or the other, but aren’t closed borders and ending the ridiculous anti-white discrimination in our university admissions aren’t these things worth actually acknowledging that Donald Trump has done a lot of good, even if you disagree with him on that one issue?’

You can have that disagreement and I think I have had that disagreement. What I don’t like is this idea is ‘Oh this person…’ First of all, I’ve seen this with Donald Trump, I’ve seen it with Tucker, I’ve seen it with any number of people that I’ve spoken to about politics, where some reporter will come and say ‘Well Donald Trump said this terrible thing. Do you disavow it?’ And then I’ll go and look at what he said and I’ll be like ‘Actually, not only do I [not] disavow it… you’re lying about what he said, and what he actually said is totally correct, it’s 100% right.’ So I don’t do the thing where I allow the media to put words into anybody’s mouth.

What I do is I listen to what people say, and when Tucker says for example that Abdul El-Sayed is the America First candidate, what I’d say to Tucker, again, I’ve said this to him privately and I’ll say it publicly: OK Abdul El-Sayed is a guy who you agree with him about the Iran War and I understand that. But, wait a second, this is a guy who says the Iran conflict is problem because it violates international law. How is that America First? A guy who said that a terrorist who tried to kill a bunch of innocent school children, that he empathized not with the innocent families, but with the terrorist himself.

So I think you have a responsibility to have these disagreements, but I’m not going to do the thing where I say ‘Because I disagree with what Tucker has said about Abdul El-Sayed therefore I think he’s a terrible person and I disavow him.’ I am never going to do that. I think it’s disloyal. And I think that anybody who conducts himself like that in order to gain political advantage is not worthy of the Vice Presidency.

I thought this was a bad answer. Spicer’s question even, I think, largely misses the point: The phrasing of a potential objection as “What they’re saying here is not something that’s consistent with my values,” seems to me like an allusion to accusations of antisemitism which are a distraction from the core issue facing Carlson, Vance, and frankly, all the rest of us.

Republican voters might feel demoralized for many valid reasons today: The Iran War, price instability, the fact that problems that were decades in the making cannot be solved in just a few years. Republican voters might also be demoralized because some of the largest figures in conservative media have been lying to them in big ways for a long time. I have noted this behavior and its destructive impact on the rightwing public mind for more than a year at this point.

I want to highlight a few statements from Tucker Carlson that I’ve mentioned several times before. I keep harping on these statements because Tucker Carlson was once the best media figure in the country, perhaps even better on the issues than Trump. The statements, which concern issues that Carlson used to take leadership on, immigration and anti-white discrimination, are objectively not true, and not even plausibly true.

On March 20, 2026, while speaking on a livestream with Blaze commentator Auron MacIntyre, Carlson said:

Trump has not shut down immigration into this country. In fact, it’s accelerated in ways that are really destructive, which is to say through legal means, H1Bs, refugee resettlement. That’s still ongoing. That has not stopped. In other words, the demographic change in the United States is still proceeding apace. And if you tell yourself ‘Well they shut down the border’ they did, and God bless Trump for doing that, but that doesn’t mean that the replacement of the population of the United States has stopped. No, it’s accelerating.

This is a lie. This is the opposite of reality. The Trump administration has actually reduced legal immigration 2.7x more than it has reduced illegal immigration.

Carlson’s comments about population replacement are objectively not true as well. In fact, the Trump administration has managed to drop the United States’ immigrant population for the first time since the 1970s. Carlson’s argument doesn’t even hold up under racial terms that he would probably only allude to: The white fertility rate has increased steadily under the Trump administration, while the fertility rates of virtually all other racial groups have declined.

On June 23, 2026, Tucker Carlson said during interview with Alex Jones:

CARLSON: I want to push an issue out there that I think is of central importance, it’s never mentioned, and that’s the racism against whites, the institutional racism against whites in the United States. Where if you’re a white man it’s harder to get a job, a federal contract, or college admission, and that’s factually true it’s proven, not just statistically proven by disparate impact but proven by document requests delivered in lawsuits and we know for a fact this is happening, and DOJ has basically done nothing to fix it. And so that’s like a core question: Can the US government, can our biggest institutions, commit open racism against the people whose ancestors built this country? And the answer is “Yes they can.”

This is a lie. This is the opposite of reality. The Trump administration has made combatting anti-white discrimination a major priority at the DOJ and other agencies previously used to implement discrimination against white people, particularly young white men. A few months ago when I first wrote about this quote, I provided a list of actions the DOJ specifically had taken before Carlson’s interview with Jones. Since then, the Trump administration has continued to take aggressive action to combat anti-white discrimination. Rather than having “basically done nothing” about the problem, as Carlson claimed, the Trump administration has been unusually energetic in dealing with this topic in particular. It’s one of Trump’s most significant achievements.

Finally, we have an August 28, 2026, interview with former Border Patrol chief Gregory Bovino. Carlson said in his opening monologue:

The true betrayal of the second Trump term, may not be foreign policy. That’s the most damaging thing Trump or any American president has ever done. Beginning a fruitless war with Iran and thereby destroying our empire and probably our dollar but in terms of a political betrayal, what Trump has not done on immigration is more profound, because you probably won’t find a single Trump voter who disagreed with Trump’s views on immigration, and again this is why Trump was able to move from the private sector as a branding guy to the White House as an American President was on the basis of his promises on immigration so for him to betray those promises is profound.

. . .

No one has pointed this out. Democrats have no incentive to point it out, of course. ICE shot a couple of protestors last year and so the emphasis has been on that “They’re murderous thugs!” OK, we can debate that, obviously shooting unarmed people is bad, never defend it. But that’s not the whole story, the whole story is that immigration enforcement in the United States has stopped. Has stopped! And this fact, which is a central fact, which will define what our country is like going forward, or even if it exists as a coherent country, has been completely ignored.

Aside from my objections to the characterization of the liberal activists famously shot by ICE in Minneapolis as unarmed protestors, one was armed with a car that she had used to block traffic and was being rammed into an ICE agent shortly before she was shot, the other literally had a gun on his waist as he was following ICE agents around trying to interfere with their work before he was shot in a confused physical altercation that he provoked, what Carlson is saying here is a lie. This is the opposite of reality. Immigration enforcement in the United States has not stopped. In fact, when Carlson said this, enforcement was surging. The issue has not been completely ignored. It is not even worth trying to engage with this claim; it’s just a lie. We are beyond hyperbole here. No one could say what Carlson is saying in good faith.

The issue with Tucker Carlson is not that he is taking too principled a stand over US overseas interventions or that he has lost perspective on the relative importance of this or that matter of public interest. Both of these things might be true, but they’re kind of beside the point. The issue is that Carlson is telling lies about the Trump administration's policy and record. I think the only and obvious conclusion that someone would reach from this behavior (it’s not hard at all to disprove these claims), is that Carlson is attempting to deceive his audience and convince them to not support Republicans in the upcoming elections, in effect working to make our political position weaker and put our enemies in power. He is lying to try to make us lose.

I think Vance is focusing on his “disagreement” with Tucker over the Iran issue so that he can present himself as a kind of synthesis between the Carlson and Trump positions: Vance is obviously an Iran intervention skeptic, yet he remains a supporter of the Trump administration. You can do both, that’s very true. I don’t like the Iran intervention either and think it was a big mistake. I would say that this is probably a majority view among Republicans, even if only unconsciously.

However, if Vance is attempting to craft a middle path here, it is a doomed effort.

The best moment of Tucker Carlson’s career was his heroic early coverage of the George Floyd Riots. At the time Republicans, even President Trump, were responding with passivity and accommodation to unacceptable behavior. Carlson famously began his monologue: “When the mobs came, they abandoned us.”

Rightwing politics today are overrun with people who think they can get what they want by trying to make us lose. Outgoing establishment Senator Thom Tillis relished the thought of a “bloodbath” for Republicans in the upcoming midterms. There is a legion of mainstream and fringe populist figures smaller than Tucker who repeat many of the same lies that he does and tell Republicans that either they have no reason to vote or, in fact, that they should vote for Democrats. Lies were allowed to become common knowledge. These people even openly collaborate with the enemy now; it doesn’t faze anyone anymore. Although these figures often have bitter rivalries and cannot agree among themselves about any number of topics, they all agree that the solution to their problems is real world political defeat for us.

Vice President Vance has shown passivity and accommodation in the face of this epidemic internal dysfunction. His statements on Tucker Carlson are ground zero for this behavior. No, this is not just a disagreement about policy.

Of course, the failure is not unique to Vance. Many of the most prominent leaders in conservatism seem confused when dealing with obvious threats and liabilities. Someone takes a shit on the floor and people will talk about everything but the smell. Even President Trump himself should be doing far more to crack down, though he at least has the excuse of being 80 years old and the President of the United States with countless other world-shaping responsibilities and preoccupations.

The popularity of many self-destructive strains of thought in rightwing circles today is not due to the unusual strength or timeliness of these arguments, but rather to the present unusual weakness of conservative leaders, especially after the murder of Charlie Kirk. All this online stuff is new to them and they have no idea how to handle it so they don’t handle it at all. A lot of these people are just waiting to surrender to or cut a deal with bad actors so they can stop thinking about it.

The biggest challenge facing Republicans is a lack of internal discipline. When someone is trying to engineer defeat for us, everyone needs to know that their leaders can recognize this behavior and will aggressively oppose it. This is important if you want to be President. The public follows strength. As Carlson wrote in the caption to his Floyd Riot monologue: “People will not forgive weakness. That’s not a partisan point, it’s human nature.”

The biggest risk for Vance’s political future is not that people won’t think he’s “based” enough if he pushes back against former allies who have turned on the President, it’s that people will think he’s weak because he’s surrounded by people who engage in unacceptable behavior and he largely accepts it. It doesn’t seem like Vance is trying to reason with someone who has adopted an unreasonable position, it seems like he’s bargaining with someone who has made it clear through their untrue claims that they are negotiating in bad faith over how much damage they get to do to us. I don’t want people to think that the big priority is bringing someone who acts like this back on board. When that’s the dynamic, it doesn’t matter how effective and right you are when you talk about any number of important other issues, you just look weak.

Americans need their country back. Republicans need to win for that to happen. All the successes of the last two years could be undone in a few very bad weeks. That’s how it’s always been. We’re still just hurtling across the tightrope. It’s remarkable how much people in and outside of the Trump administration have achieved so far in the face of overwhelming opposition, and at great risk to themselves. These people deserve better than sabotage and surrender.

I want us to win more than anything in the world. We have an opportunity to fix our problems at a scale unimaginable a few years ago. If we can hold on to the Senate and the Presidency until the 2030 Census, we have the chance to lock liberals out of national power for generations. We can prevent WW3, go to the Moon, save our country and people and tens of millions of lives. We’re still in the Good Timeline, after all. That’s not going to happen if there’s this never-ending internal circus where when someone is saying things that are clearly not true in order to make us lose, our leaders respond with anything other than hostility.

So, what is to be done? Does Vance need to “disavow” Tucker Carlson? No, I don’t think so. The disavowal game is dumb. No one really gives that much of a shit about personal relationships. The reason it keeps coming up is that Carlson keeps making false claims and Vance keeps giving these bad answers to journalists’ questions. However, Vance certainly does need to let everyone know that when this guy lies, you shouldn’t believe the lies. If you can’t do that, it is going to be very tough to convince Americans that you are the right person to defend their interests at the highest level.

I just wanted to let you know that American Moment, one of the most prominent conservative organizations in the country, has once again opened applications for its Summer 2027 Fellowship for American Statecraft.

The program runs from May to August 2027 and offers fellows professional training, job placement, housing assistance, and networking sessions. They do all this while also paying fellows ($3250 a month) and giving them health insurance. This is basically everything you’d need to get your start working in government.

Most notably, American Moment encourages young people who don’t have political backgrounds or “relevant” education to apply.

You do not need a college degree. You do not need to know someone. You do not need to have ever worked anywhere near politics before. If you’re married, have a kid, whatever, I’m sure they can try to find some way to make that work. There’s a lot of untapped talent out there and they are trying to funnel it into the Trump administration and related organizations.

Youth unemployment and underemployment is probably my biggest concern right now. If you’re working some shitty job and don’t know what you’re going to do next, or if you’re just interested in politics and don’t know how to get your start, I strongly encourage you to apply.

Trump has cleared out tens of thousands of liberal public employees since taking office. We need to flood the zone with their replacements. It’s our country. It’s our government. You are the plan. If you want to help out with the massive changes occurring these days, you should definitely look into this.

Applications close January 17, 2027, make sure you apply as soon as possible to increase your chances!

One note: These are serious people, so make sure you’re putting your best foot forward in your application. Don’t mention a bunch of crazy online stuff. Don’t try to seem “based.” The online sphere is dying; DC is where all the action is now. Good luck!

I had made an effort to avoid contemporary political content on this Substack, an effort which gradually became less and less convincing.

In light of this, and as part of my never-ending campaign to provide more content to paid subscribers, I’ve decided to start mailbag episodes. Scott Greer over at Highly Respected does these and it seems like his subscribers really like them.

I’ll be taking questions on politics, news, high culture, any of the serious topics that our esteemed paid subscribers might be interested in. There will be a moratorium on edrama, gossip, personal stuff, etc.

Although mailbag episodes will be available to all paid subscribers. I’ll be limiting the ability to ask questions to members of the new Benevolent Patron (BP) tier. These noble souls are going above and beyond to support the podcast.

In the wake of my endorsement of Lisa DeMuth in the state of Minnesota’s Republican gubernatorial primary, which no doubt played a decisive role in her victory, it seems that Minnesota is officially BACK IN PLAY.

Democrats nominated an extremely weak Senate candidate this year, Peggy Flanagan. Flanagan was the Lt. Governor of spite eunuch Tim Walz’s disastrous administration and is uniquely tied to the numerous fraud and corruptions scandals emerging from the state in recent months. She looks really weird and is crazy.

I have long been an advocate of supporting our people behind the lines in libtard occupied areas. States like Minnesota and New Jersey often get very little attention from professional activists and fundraisers, even though electoral margins in these states are not very big, unique conditions on the ground often present opportunities for upset victories, and voter participation is so low that a little bit of tender love and care can totally alter decades-old political dynamics.

Let’s not forget that Florida used to be a swing state. Republicans’ best chance at holding the Senate is emerging from Charlie Kirk’s forward-looking decision to dramatically increase TPUSA’s organizing activities in New Hampshire. I strongly suspect a similar gambit could be made in Vermont next election. A lot of “electoral realities” that seem set in stone are actually pretty tenuous. These states are home to Democrats’ C- and D-teams and retarded clowns often make it through primaries.

Even if there might be fools’ gold in some of these longshot elections, I really do think now more than ever Republicans should spend big everywhere. Prevent Democrats from concentrating resistance. We have the money advantage. What was the point of the Trump administration pardoning all of those fraudsters if not to play ads about girls in boys sports, Floyd Riot quotes on abolishing the police, and Somalis stealing grandma’s retirement money 24/7?

There’s a longer piece on this on the way, but I do think the next two-ish years are critical. We get to see if we can cement our gains and create a system that will outlast Trump and end America’s political deadlock, or if we’ll succumb to internal divisions and return to endless paralysis and decline. At the very least, dumping money into these states provides huge downstream benefits to often ignored but winnable elections for state legislators, sheriffs, prosecutors, and judges, all of which make a real difference in normal peoples’ lives and provide the ground from which bigger victories can grow.

First, the clip I saw. Brenna Morello is a former Fox News, Newsmax, and Infowars reporter who has become an independent journalist with a large following on Elon Musk’s Twitter. Morello made these remarks while speaking at the recent FORUM panel on immigration that took place alongside the GOP’s Midterm convention in Dallas. You can watch the full event here (the immigration panel begins at 50:20).

I’ve transcribed the full exchange below:

[Blaze commentator and panel moderator John] Doyle: I guess, continuing on our last discussion, the attitude everyone feels about immigration. This is supposed to be a bit more practical. I guess I’d first ask does anyone have any objections before we continue, that immigration is a very big problem, that these people at scale can’t assimilate and they’re fundamentally changing the character of the nation. Does anyone have minor or major disagreement with that?

Morello: No.

[Blaze reporter Sara] Gonzalez: It is the problem.

Doyle: Wonderful. Ok. Well, how do you think we are so far at solving the problem? I mean, going into the first Trump administration I remember covering fights over wall funding. Now the border is sealed Day 1, we’re building hundreds of miles of wall, we have the mass deportation operations occurring. But still people are seeing the fruits of the invasions in their communities. The young guys still understand they’re going to be made to compete with these people for jobs they were promised were they to keep their nose clean and get into good schools. Is this issue being solved quickly enough? Is the bleeding stopped? Where do you see this right now?

Morello: … I also want to bring up the fact that Markwayne Mullin since taking over as DHS Secretary has done a horrific job so far in my opinion. Mainly due to the fact that under Kristi Noem’s leadership a lot things were happening. There were warehouses that were purchased under the Big Beautiful Bill. 11 of them were purchased under Noem. And those warehouses were supposed to be detention facilities for illegal aliens because obviously Democrats claim that they’re supposed to get due process. So, the idea was to stack them up into these facilities, and unfortunately once Markwayne Mullen took over he either sold seven of them or reallocated them. So far, we have about several of them either sold or reallocated and the problem with that is that’s $700 million of our money that was intentionally given to us, or to the government, to get rid of these illegal aliens, and the White House, DHS, no one’s denying this report. It was initially reported by the New York Times, which I was very skeptical at first, but I reached out to everyone and they’re not denying it…

As far as I can tell, no one bothered to challenge or rebut Morello on this point later in the event.

It is true that the Department of Homeland Security has paused the purchase and retrofitting of warehouses to serve as immigration detention centers. DHS under Kristi Noem had set aside $700 million to purchase and redevelop such warehouses. However, a simple Google search would have revealed that the DHS just spent $1.5 billion to purchase existing private prisons and expand them in order to house greater numbers of immigration detainees, likely far more safely and sustainably than would have been possible in a retrofitted warehouse. Rather than a betrayal, the abandonment of the warehouse scheme was a change in tactics that could have been explained in any number of perfectly reasonable and valid ways.

That DHS is changing tactics from warehouses to prisons is not secret or obscure knowledge. It was reported about in Time Magazine well before the FORUM event. Liberal activist groups are tracking this development all around the country with great concern. It is very strange that this shift would go unmentioned by someone who is supposedly passionate about the issue and makes her money by talking about it.

Of course, a reasonable person might disagree about whether or not this particular change in tactics is a good idea or necessary. You don’t have to (and shouldn’t) take everything the government says at face value. At the same time, it’s obvious that these people are only presenting a very narrow part of the story with objectives that are distinct from merely conveying the truth. There were a lot of other things said at the panel, I agreed with many of them, but you have to wonder how many statements like this slip in that you just don’t catch.

Recently we have heard about lots of “betrayals” by the Trump administration that are actually pretty easy to explain in other ways if you have a more complete picture or viewed developments through the lens of government procedure. I was trying to figure out why this statement in particular bothered me, then I realized where I had seen Morello’s name before: She showed up in one of my previous articles.

Morello was one of the people who claimed that Secretary Mullin had abandoned the Trump administration’s commitment to deport “Temporary Protected Status” (TPS) recipients, illegal immigrants who had received what amounted to indefinite legal status and work authorization, immediately after the Trump administration had won an important court case that allowed these illegal immigrants to be deported.

Morello falsely claimed that the Trump administration had failed to even revoke recipients’ TPS designations. In essence, she tried to reframe one of the Trump administration’s biggest wins into a betrayal.

This is a pattern of behavior that is not difficult to detect or understand. It’s very unsubtle that a network of rightwing influencers has set its sights on DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Although Mullin wouldn’t have been my first, second, or third choice to run DHS, these influencers seem to be trying to remove him from his role by mischaracterizing his statements (often bad), the real-world results that DHS under Mullin has delivered (historically good), and the Trump administration’s actual policy on legal and illegal immigration (incredible). I don’t think it’s a good idea to try to force out a senior government official with very uncharitable or outright fake criticism on the eve of an election that will determine how much power that government will have to actually implement its agenda over the next two years.

Although some of the people engaged in this behavior are probably only trying to force a limited personnel change, others I think it’s pretty clear are doing this as part of a larger effort to undermine the Trump administration and depress Republican turnout before the midterms. I won’t speculate about what Morello’s motivations are. I don’t know anything about her. I had never heard of her before she showed up on my Twitter timeline in late June. My position is and has been that someone’s motivations when they are engaged in this kind of behavior do not matter. The impact of their behavior is what matters, and that impact is clearly negative.

What would the natural effect of claiming that your elected representatives have betrayed you be on election turnout? What would voters conclude from the statement that the Trump administration’s immigration efforts have been a disaster if they support mass deportations? Would they be more or less likely to vote for Republicans in the upcoming midterms? If voters do not vote for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections and Democrats take over Congress and governorships in swing states, will aggressive deportation policies be easier or harder to implement? These are easy questions to answer.

If Morello is a subject matter expert, then why does she make claims that are objectively not true or create a fundamentally misleading impression? Are the risks that this behavior poses to our electoral chances two months from now justified given that there is nearly every indication that the United States is arresting and deporting more people than ever before? If she is passionate about immigration, then why is she saying things that would only serve to reduce the real-world power of immigration restrictionists?

This person does not seem to possess great or unique insight into the immigration issue. She is, most charitably, a popularizer of talking points that are already popular and have been popular for some time. Less charitably, she is just another influencer trying to advance her personal goals by launching misleading or untrue attacks on the Trump administration, thereby undermining Republicans’ overall political position and, necessarily, the implementation of the aggressive deportation policies that she nominally supports.

If someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about or doesn’t tell the truth, what is the purpose of having a substantive conversation with them? There is negative value to this kind of public discussion with this sort of participant. Moving this content off of the timeline and onto a stage does not grant any kind of added salience.

A few weeks ago, there was a debate between “MAGA” and “America First” hosted by Brandon Straka, the founder of the #WalkAway movement.

There were only two notable moments from the event. The first was towards the end when John Doyle, future moderator of the FORUM panel mentioned above and speaking for the “MAGA” side, pointed out that the nature of the conversation itself was subversive: The panel had spent the overwhelming majority of time arguing in circles about the Iran War and the Epstein files, topics about which most of the participants more or less agreed on, and basically no time on immigration, which Republican voters before the election had indicated was their most important issue and the Trump administration had delivered historic results on. Doyle pointed out that many influencers seemed to fundamentally misunderstand their roles.

The other notable moment was when a participant from the “America First” side, Pastor Joel Webbon, shifted his posture to reveal that he had brought a gun into the debate room. The gun was jutting out of the front of his pants in a way that I have never seen someone carry in a suit before. You should not have to explain to an adult why this was an inappropriate thing to do.

There is certainly a lot of debate occurring on the Right now. There is remarkably little value to these conversations. At best, they are mainstreamed retreads of once productive discussions that emerged from fringe circles more than a decade ago, often play acted by people with IQs a standard deviation lower than those of the original participants. At worst, they work to actively undermine important real-world efforts. The continuation of conversations well past exhaustion and the total lack of standards and discernment in the rightwing media environment have created many perverse incentive structures that rob these exchanges of utility.

Perhaps the most perverse of these incentives were on display in the highly publicized “debate” between Andrew Wilson and Candace Owens over the murder of Charlie Kirk.

For nearly a year since Charlie Kirk was assassinated, Owens has launched an unending stream of baseless and demonstrably untrue attacks on Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow, and the senior staff of TPUSA, framed as part of an investigation into Kirk’s murder. The spectacle of these false accusations and broader climate of hysteria and confusion that accompanied the murder redirected public attention away from Kirk’s leftwing killer.

Wilson rewarded Owens with $300,000 for the privilege of “debating” her over her obviously false accusations. The debate, despite gathering enormous public attention that dissipated almost instantly afterwards, I’m certain changed virtually no one’s mind. It had zero impact on the court case, where the evidence and witness testimony will actually be examined, that is going to determine the fate of Tyler Robinson, the man who killed Charlie Kirk, who was caught on video and confessed. The existence of the conversation was a net negative. This person was doing something really bad and others gave her money to go on TV.

Although I, like many other people, am profoundly disgusted by the treatment Erika Kirk and the team at TPUSA received even from “friends” after the murder, I do think that they made a mistake by repeatedly attempting to engage the people attacking them and the broader circle enabling the attacks in a rational dialogue rather than responding immediately with lawsuits and blanket hostility.

All the problems I pointed out 18 months ago have gotten far worse. Although I have talked myself blue in the face about how best to solve them, few of my suggestions have been acted upon. In fact, the solutions that many people have arrived at seem guaranteed to make the problems worse. I don’t care what motivates these people anymore. It’s obvious that the situation has been badly mismanaged, if it was ever managed at all.

It’s crazy to me that people can’t tell that Gregory Bovino is a retard now. Morello mentioned him favorably several times during her remarks at the FORUM panel. He lies constantly about the administration’s policy and achievements. The “100 million illegals” claim he popularized is genuinely very stupid. He suggested that the Trump administration was trying to kill him during an interview with Tucker Carlson, who is transparently trying to convince Republicans to stay home before the midterms, and advised a far-left journalist to investigate his former colleagues. Most of his posts on Twitter seem to be written using AI. What are people doing tolerating this character?

There has been much discussion about what to do with the Right’s “radicals” and “revolutionaries,” terms that many seem to confuse for simply having an opinion and loudly restating it over and over again. How can we resolve the questions that have caused so much division and discord without even more talk?

Let me tell you, speaking from my extensive study of the Russian Revolution, that if someone in a revolutionary group were to constantly make false claims about the group’s leaders and policy, if they minimized successes and embellished failures, if they loudly predicted defeat was inevitable due to betrayal from the top, if they tried to engineer temporary losses to teach the Party a lesson or provide an opening for themselves to assert greater internal control, if they merely interacted with people who did these things without hostility, they would not be members of that revolutionary group for very long. Lenin credited the Bolsheviks’ success to their “iron discipline.” Early Soviet history is full of ruthless purges of internal opposition. Actual revolutionaries would just march you out back and shoot you.

The good news is that we are not a revolutionary group in a collapsing empire, we are a normal political party in a normal country. The situation has stabilized. Violent crime has had its largest drop in modern history. The murder rate is at a 100+ year low. The country wasn’t close to a revolution or civil war during the horrible Biden era and it isn’t close to one now. We’re going back to the Moon. Although I still think there’s a systemic challenge coming to our country before 2035, the problem facing us at the moment is winning the peace. You don’t have to send these troublesome figures to the gulag or march them out anywhere; you just have to stop giving them money and affirmation. Audience interest in influencer content is already in steep decline. These figures are dependent on others for relevance. If you just stop helping them, they will wither on the vine and eventually disintegrate.

“Leaders” of the conservative movement have correctly noted a massive drop in support for Republicans among young people. Many mistakenly believe that this is because they aren’t doing enough to mirror this group’s rhetoric and preferences, even though this rhetoric and those preferences enjoy far greater tolerance and representation in politics and government than ever before.

A bigger problem is that leaders aren’t showing leadership: When influencers began to say things about the Trump administration that weren’t true, these leaders did not hit back. Lies were treated as a normal part of rightwing discourse. Behavior that would be unacceptable in any kind of professional or social environment was treated as a normal part of rightwing discourse. Suggesting that we put leftwingers in power was treated as a normal part of rightwing discourse. People who do these things are still widely tolerated; some get let in the front door. It is not surprising that nothing good could grow from this poisoned ground. Trying to appease or accommodate bad faith critics only came across as weak. Young people are especially sensitive to this dynamic. No one will support you if you’re weak. Stop being weak.

If we are to win, it will not be because someone found just the right words, it will be because people at TPUSA and various GOP organizations did the difficult, unpleasant, and expensive work required to train and coordinate volunteers and professional activists in competitive elections across the country. It will be because the underpaid young people manning the machinery of state pulled the right lever at the right time. The Right has moved out of theory and into practice. A lot of legacy figures are not equipped to make the jump and are trying to preserve their relevance by creating problems that they say you can solve by giving them money and attention.

It is not productive to allow stupid and dishonest people to spin their wheels about this stuff indefinitely. I think it’s counterproductive. We need more deportations, not more restatements of the now commonplace theoretical case for deportations, paired with rhetoric that makes real world deportations harder to achieve. The online influencer class has built a ghetto for itself. If you cannot close the door behind these conversations and these figures, you will be trapped inside with them forever.

I’ve really been enjoying posting more on Substack. I’ve noticed, however, that the Substack timeline is pretty dead. I assume most people are just temporarily commuting from other social media platforms and don’t even think to use Substack in this way, even though most of the functionality is there. It’s also a little bit opaque how to get other peoples’ posts to reliably show up on your feed (I often see posts from months ago).

I’m going to remedy this and further reunite our scattered forces by instituting a Follow Friday. If you’re a paid subscriber, sound off in the comments below. I will be following everyone who replies and I encourage you all to follow each other as well.

The defining characteristic of these networks, and why they were able to gain so much support from many naive people who had been outspoken Trump supporters in the past, is that they claim to be attacking Trump “from the Right”: They agree with you. They know all the based things to say. They might have even been around for a long time. Their only humble request, their only noble goal, is that they want more of the good things that Trump promised to deliver in 2024 and 2020 and 2016.

Whenever you point out that a criticism is not fair or that what they’re reacting to isn’t even real, these bad faith critics will pretend it is a sign that you just didn’t care about an issue as much as they do. This is usually followed by an oft-repeated but demonstrably untrue claim about something the Trump admin did or didn’t do.

I’m sure every one of you has had an argument like this before by this point, maybe even with someone who used to be fine and who you otherwise generally agree with.

One of the biggest mistakes I see well-meaning people make is treating this kind of argument like an actual debate. When someone comes at you like this, you’re not actually discussing Trump’s immigration policy or whatever anymore, you’re discussing how they feel. You can’t argue someone out of a feeling.

What people are often doing when they lie to your face or act unreasonably is trying to display control over you: “I can make you discuss something that isn’t even real. I choose what we talk about and when.” “I can do bad stuff and I bet you won’t do anything about it. You can’t do anything about it, actually, because I’ve got all these other people on my side who have my back.” Others are just building a case against you to justify their existing feelings, with nothing you say or do affecting their predetermined conclusion.

Again, it’s important to get out of argument or debate mode when you encounter this behavior. If someone lies all the time, you can’t have a real discussion with them. If someone is actually just trying to make you lose and put your enemies in power, it’s unproductive to litigate whatever point they’re making: You already know where they’re always going to end up and some things should never be acceptable to you.

Would you argue with a male-to-female transexual over whether or not they were a woman? Do you think that you’d both make good points and present your evidence and reach a better understanding of the issue together, like you might in a normal argument? No. They’re delusional and have a big network of people to fall back on to support their delusions. There is pretty much nothing that you can say as an individual in a debate to alter that dynamic with them.

Even engaging in this kind of word game, acknowledging the underlying premises as valid and accepting the issue as an open question, is only going to mislead outside observers. Sometimes you’re smarter for the arguments you don’t bother to have. The only way to win is often not to play.

I think what American conservatives want far more than for their leaders to reach a common understanding with the popular figures who constantly accuse them of treason, betrayal, sabotage, whatever, is for them to lead and make it clear that this is not how people are going to act if they want to stay in our circles. Many conservatives will claim that they want you to surrender to their demands when they actually just want you to be strong and win.

What does setting these boundaries mean in practice? Well, you shouldn’t just go around disavowing people because the media asks you to. President Trump perfected the response to this kind of trap: “If you tell me to jump, I’m never going to do it. You can’t make me do anything. I’m in charge, not you.” You also should always be open to well informed and good faith criticism, even if it’s harsh.

At the same time, pretending there’s still a genuine internal political disagreement occurring with the people who act in these ways all the time is contributing to the problems they cause.

A lot of people on the Left were really happy to announce the outbreak of the “MAGA Civil War” and want to draw it out for as long as possible. They’re going to keep asking about it. Every mixed answer, “I disagree about this or that but…” however reasonable and well-crafted it might seem, only raises more questions. At the end of the day you are going to have to admit that there’s not an actual conversation occurring anymore. There are not two sides to these debates.

Vice President JD Vance was recently asked about his relationship with Tucker Carlson at a press conference. Although Vance has been a great Vice President and I’m going to be happy to support him as the Republican nominee in 2028, I think he gave what’s going on now too much credit.

I’ve mentioned the concept of land acknowledgements several times before. It’s an old meme at this point: Libtards would have to begin every meeting by saying they live on stolen land. It sounded ridiculous and undermined whatever followed. It moved attention away from whatever was actually important about these events and towards a ritual that didn’t mean much at the end of the day.

“I refuse to disavow” has become just another land acknowledgement for the Right. You can make reasonable criticism of someone’s behavior without mentioning your personal relationship at all. In fact, you should if it’s necessary.

We have our private lives and our public lives. Vance and Carlson’s private relationship is no one’s business but theirs. One of the best moments of Singapore’s longtime Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was when he coolly shut down a reporter’s questions about his wife. In Western countries we’ve gotten kind of used to invasive throwaway questions and answers like that. We don’t really need to hear about these things. In fact, hearing about them can be a distraction.

The real thing people are concerned about with Carlson is his public behavior: He’s saying things that aren’t true in order to hurt our electoral chances in the upcoming midterms, in effect working to put Democrats in power.

It’s not subtle what someone is trying to accomplish when they claim that immigration enforcement in the United States has shut down at a time when we’ve actually hit all-time highs of immigration arrests for three months in a row.

It’s not subtle what someone is trying to do when they say the Trump administration is barely doing anything about anti-white discrimination when actually it’s done far more to tackle the problem than any of its predecessors since the issue first emerged.

This isn’t a political debate occurring here, with two equally valid sides that you should weigh and carefully evaluate. This isn’t like “I know we disagree about tax policy but we can still be friends.” There’s no disagreement in a traditional sense: The things Tucker is saying are not based in reality and I doubt he believes them in any meaningful way. There are many figures who have been acting in this way for years now and are still bizarrely treated as genuine participants in political discourse.

Some of the biggest names in conservative media did the “I refuse to disavow” dance with Candace Owens for months after Charlie Kirk was murdered. Owens’s behavior only got worse and the attacks on Erika Kirk and Charlie Kirk’s friends at TPUSA escalated into one of the most disgraceful public spectacles in recent memory. Many conservative figures were laughing all the way to the bank as this was going on.

From the very beginning people should have been pushing back hard against these lies instead of talking about Ben Shapiro and cancel culture and “my friend Candace is such a nice person.” I don’t want to hear about any of that stuff when there’s a big immediate problem that’s getting worse. It was a distraction from real issues.

After a certain point you have to rip the Band-Aid off. You don’t have to performatively condemn someone and everything they ever did or write them off forever or endorse people who hate you and might be doing similar things but for the wrong reasons. You should just say, for yourself and everyone who is counting on you, what’s actually important: “This is not real and it’s not OK.” That’s the only thing people should be hearing about this stuff.

I think it’s really important that everyone stop tolerating bad faith attacks and bad faith people. These behaviors and these figures are not really part of our thing. It’s all so vestigial now, like an appendix that burst but hasn’t been removed yet. I think part of the reason “discourse” in “the scene” got so bad is that when some participants made it clear they weren’t trying to achieve good outcomes or working within reality anymore, others kept engaging like there was still a normal conversation occurring. It was like watching a disease spread.

Knock on wood, but I think the tide genuinely is turning against this stuff. What these people have been saying is too obviously fake and the people who have been saying it are too obviously damaged. Not only has President Trump not forgotten his promises to the base, he’s delivering on them in bigger ways than ever before. Everyone who has been predicting that the sky was going to fall for the last two years straight has been proven totally wrong. Lots of unreliable people who were only casually engaging with politics are getting bored and moving on to other stuff, others unable to cope with the constant twists of fate have become very stupid and discredited themselves.

Cultural moments of lies, panic, and paranoia are not sustainable for very long. The trash always ends up taking itself out and the cream always rises back to the top. I am seeing a lot of new clarity and focus as we enter the final sprint to the midterms and I think that’s only going to become more noticable.

Americans need to win and love a winner. Despite the noise online, there is not a huge constituency for the people who are trying to make us lose. We actually outnumber them by a lot. I think it’s well past time to move beyond these discourse cycles and these people. It’s time to step over it all. Trump won, we don’t have to do this anymore.
