Amazing presentation of a confusing period of time written by disparate vantage points. I think it's timely with the raw anger you could see from Karmelo Anthony toward a random White young man like Austin Metcalf. These men are just unhinged with hatred and fueled by these demagogues and race narratives. It's easy to see how they would strike out at random White people in SF for their "revenge" fantasies. When I was researching a high school paper for the MOVE Project in Philadelphia (my history teacher was low-key Based and let me do it), I found it hard to find reliable witnesses and testimony because everyone involved had a dog in the fight.
If you're interested in the period, I think you'd love these personal narratives of a cop "Downtown White Police" by James Lancia (https://a.co/d/0eAmJaAx) and a resident in the infamous White neighborhood "The Pocket" of Philadelphia during the ethnic clensing of that enclave that somehow was delisted from Amazon when I just searched for it. An older friend of mine mentioned that exact location as he grew up in Kensington and said it was absolutely dog-eat-dog world of racial attacks at the time. In that book, I remember a horrifying anecdote of a random nineteen year old White girl in West Philadelphia being set upon by a group of black men, dosed in gasoline, and burned savagely only to wander into a gas station asking for help. She collapsed and died on the spot. It was like out of a horror movie.
The more you learn about the "white flight" era the more you realize it was a fight or flight situation and flight was simply the smart choice. Race War in High School talks about how after the explosion in violence white kids leave the school in droves, either being enrolled in Catholic school or families moving to the safety of Long Island suburbs. The sick thing is none of it had to happen. It was the result of communists stoking racial hatred in hopes of sparking "the revolution."
If it was any other race, what they refer to as "White flight" in the aftermath of violent race riots in America's major cities would be recognized as a dispersed and decentralized yet highly effective campaign of ethnic cleansing.
A community can do a little bit to stop anti-social behavior like littering or cursing. I remember calling out a guy for soliciting and hassling others in our town center. He moved on and hasn’t come back. However, once you have violence and threats, the authorities must get involved lest individuals get injured or arrested themselves for defending themselves. When the authorities are compromised or held back from basic safety and discipline, then the school community will swiftly spiral.
It happens now at inner city charter schools where you get a few bad apples in there with a Woke admin. The well meaning parents try to get their kids in only to find out the same ratchet, threatening, and dangerous behavior that they were trying to shield their kids from the public schools. Some schools are so bad that they can’t even enforce the “broken windows” policy for basic bad behavior. A friend of mine was reprimanded by the white female principal for telling a black male student he cannot cat call a female tutor in school. The smug principal said they hadn’t considered this student’s “culture.”
Definitely. Much like the example in the episode communities can handle standards but when you get organized miscreants you need equally organized response. You're in real trouble when the authorities start siding with the miscreants
My father-in-law's late brother was a Philly cop from the late 60s to late 80s. I've only heard a few of the stories second hand. One that stands out is that after the MOVE bombing he was on patrol in west Philly and responded to a silent alarm that went off at a drug store. When coming around the back from the alley guy comes out with a gun. Both go to shoot the other, and both revolvers misfire (super rare for revolvers, but my father-in-law has his late brother's gun and showed me how if the hammer is drawn back a certain way it won't shoot - a built-in safety mechanism to prevent the hammer from firing in the holster). They looked at each other and walked away.
I stopped being a fat piece of shit loser and paid him $60. This episode alone was worth that. I couldn’t rightly look my family in the eyes if I didn’t pay a man for putting out high quality work like this. Plus I knew next to nothing about these murders and I agree, hopefully just reinjecting this into public knowledge will lead to some breakthrough. The Hail Mary’s worked for SFPD of the 70s, why not us?

Its extremely cartoonish but that almost makes it that much more sinister because people are believing and acting on this stuff. Keith Ellison for instance probably believes this stuff, and judging by how hes behaved towards me and people I know I’d be shocked if he didnt.
I grew up in the Bay Area and encountered more than a few old heads who were completely convinced that Patty Hearst knew Donald DeFreeze (guy who started the SLA) prior to the kidnapping. He was connected to different radical groups while he was in jail, which is apparently how he met her. There used to be Marxist (ect.) groups that brought activists into prisons for mutual education and apparently she was involved. I don’t really know because this theory was always presented in tandem with a CIA agent provocateur angle, CHAOS ect. But some elements are very credible to me. I know libtard young lawyers who spend a lot of time in prison with these kind of mutual education programs today who are also very involved with progress politics. And one of the people who first told me about this was a UC Berkeley professor who was journalist at the local paper in the 70’s. So take it with some salt. I’m not really sure what that would even mean that there was a prior connection either but it always comes to mind whenever I see the SLA mentioned.
Also I just re-watched Zodiac. Its wild watching that movie seeing places in the Bay Area that used to be totally normal like Vallejo, that are now just totally crime ridden. Its almost like these high profile insane murderers like Zodiac, Death Angels, SLA ect were a foreshadowing (or like you said a reaction to the beginning of) the disenfranchisement and destruction of these areas. What you said in this episode about young people living normal lives in San Francisco is totally right. Similar sort of thing happens today, people are the victims of crime and their lives are totally shattered but it was completely preventable and was the direct results of capitulation to bad faith activists. Wolfe’s Mau Mauing the Flak Catchers is a good investigation into the broader activist structure in this area at that time. The Black Panthers came out of that period and place as well. On this topic Radical Son by David Horowitz has been on my shelf for like 6 years but I havent gotten to it.

Radical Son is interesting. Horowitz doesn't really change his mode of thought by the end, he just expresses the kinds of ideas that led to the dangerous environment he fled and decries their results from a safer place, like a Californian transferred to Tennessee. Seems like a good, thoughtful man, but a collectivist utopian at heart.

I suggest caution giving any leeway with free episodes because these criminal subscribers will take a mile from an inch. I know I've mentioned it before, but I picked up Howard's Zebra a few years ago after you mentioned it on twitter. Classic true crime.
One thing you said towards the end resonated with me - once you start digging a little into a historic topic your uncertainty increases. That's in the nature of historiography. Each author has their own perspective, biases, access to different source material, etc. that ultimately shapes what they put out there. The only way to get true expertise in a topic is to both master the historiography by reading all the secondary works, and the primary sources in question, which will allow you to get your own interpretation out there.
It must have been so cathartic to see “Dirty Harry” (1971) at this chaotic time. I was shocked it came out two years prior to the Zebra killing sprees as it seems to be in direct reaction to them. Even the criminal in the famous “do you feel lucky, punk” was black with a striped zebra type shirt (purple and white) (https://youtu.be/38mE6ba3qj8). But imagine how good it would feel when the police detective can unapologetically defend innocent life and hunt down the killer while the authorities in real life are hamstringing the cops. I think the upcoming movie “Citizen Vigilante” that shows a father going Death Wish on immigrant criminals and human traffickers (. https://youtu.be/fVxmjwaPEFU). But I imagine sure by the end, the message will be muddled though. Otherwise, how could it have been green lit?
