Follow up on the recent article on the shooting at the “No Kings” in Salt Lake City last week: It looks like armed leftist “peacekeepers” mistakenly shot at another armed leftist, killing a bystander in the process, then had the wherewithal to lie about it to the media and police. The story that the “peacekeepers” told, that the armed man pulled out a gun and pointed it at the crowd before they began firing in self-defense, has been disproven by new video evidence. The man they shot at had taken a rifle out of his bag, but appears to have just been trying to lawfully open carry as part of the protest.

The authorities still haven’t identified the shooters or what group they belonged to, the organizer of the “No Kings” rally is claiming that they didn’t even plan on having armed security (certainly a lie), and Utah prosecutors seem unlikely to take action because they couldn’t be bothered to even put a BLM gunman on trial for shooting a driver in the head during the 2020 Floyd riots. These are sophisticated operations full of trained people who know what to say and when to say it. They have lawyers, journalists, and false witnesses ready to back up their stories. They are willing to commit illegal violence and have built the infrastructure that allows them to carry it out over the long term.

Rightwingers who talk about civil war/national divorce/whatever are kidding themselves. I still remember people online dismissing my concerns about the 2020 Utah BLM shooting because a bunch of militiamen showed up the next day and stood around in plate carriers. Rightwing militia groups are a paper tiger that ultimately lull people into passivity and inaction. Nothing happened to the 2020 BLM shooter and nothing is going to happen to him.

This threat needs to be taken seriously, which means obtaining new laws, more aggressive police and prosecutors, and elected judges who are willing to put people in jail. These are efforts that conservatives need to be more aware of, demand, and publicly support when they occur. In other words, rightwingers need to start participating in the systems they nominally control rather than puffing themselves up with escapist fantasies.

It is important to take these steps now, before the next round of widespread civil unrest from leftists begins. There will be no excuses for being unprepared, these are problems we can start solving today.
