My instinct is to be wary of uprootedness like this, not having any attachment or meaningful loyalties to other people. There is still something really charming and engaging about a young lad having the whole world at his feet, setting off somewhere, anywhere to make something of himself. I’ll have to put this on my reading list.
Part of what makes it great is that he ends it right there. It's a bold choice, or just an unconscious one. Most other writers would go on for pages commenting on their own comments.
Wanderlust is real. There are many responsibilities in life as we get older and have more duties to family and community. Get your adventuring out early, and if you can find an adventurous spouse.

I’ve got three kids, two girls and one boy. The girls always play together, always do the thing that everyone is doing.
The boy will do some of that. But every day there comes a time when he just wanders off by himself for no particular reason.

He also wrote “Miami Blues”, and a lot of other great novels.
