Weekly Round-up 10/14/2023
Ascending; taking flight
Happy weekend everyone! I hope you’re all doing well. Another full week, with articles including coverage of a mostly-forgotten terrorist attack on one of America’s greatest cathedrals.
Next week we’ll be shifting gears and returning to the Russian Civil War, with a few odd thoughts on the current (unusually optimistic) forecast for the American Right.
As always, I encourage and beg you to please become a paid subscriber to support my work. Every single subscriber is an immense help to me. Please please please.
There were 6 new articles this week.
Anarchists almost blew up St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1915 (Paid) - Gives an introduction to anarchist terrorism of the period by recounting the fall of the “Bresci Circle” after a conspiracy to blow up a cathedral in New York City was discovered and infiltrated by the (then brand-new) NYPD bomb squad. The investigation itself is interesting but the trial afterwards, in which liberal lawyers created a bogus civil rights controversy to distract from the bombing, is perhaps more revealing
Watch-along #4: The North Water E4 (Paid) - Continuing live commentary on and coverage of the classic adventure miniseries The North Water. You can find links to the previous Watch-alongs as well as the show itself in the article
DeSantis betrays himself by falling for debate meme (Free) - Thoughts on the recent decision of former Presidential contender Ron DeSantis to agree a debate with California Governor Gavin Newsom. The decision will almost certainly lead to disaster not just for DeSantis, but the entire American Right, and reflects larger (and reoccurring) cultural issues in rightwing spaces
Schoolmarm DeSantis tries to longhouse President Trump for accurate Israel comments (Free) - Outlining Ron DeSantis’s recent attacks on President Trump for saying things that are objectively true about the situation in Israel, recalling the political climate of perpetual dishonesty and hysteria that existed before Trump entered the scene with a realist and humanitarian foreign policy
Comparing the New Mexico 2A protestors with the NYC Zoomer Sunrise Movement (Free) - Analyzing the direction of leftwing and rightwing protests. Although the latter appear to be more heavily armed (for now), the former pose a much more immediate threat to the public and even the powers at be if left unchecked
That’s all, folks. Full catalog below. See you next week!
