One of my all time favorites. I want the Irish mob boss's cozy office in the worst way

I didn’t pick up on the gay themes at all. I’ve seen this movie multiple times but never picked it up. Can someone smarter point them out to me?

There's a gay love triangle between the small-time bookie Mink (Steve Buscemi's character, who only shows up on screen once, but plays an important role in the plot), Bernie Bernbaum, and Eddie Dane. Eddie doesn't know about the affair between Mink and Bernie, but would likely kill them both if he did. Mink is in on Bernie's scam against Casper and is friends with Verna, Bernie's sister. Mink panics and kills the private detective that Leo sent to monitor Verna, thinking that the detective was actually sent to follow him and uncover his gay affair/scam. Bernie later kills Mink and places his body (with the face shot off) at Miller's Crossing, both to eliminate a potential witness against him and to provide additional "confirmation" that Tom actually killed Bernie.

Weird. I always assumed that Buscemi killed The Rug because he thought he was on to the fixed fights. Never picked up on the gay subtext...then again I AM exceptionally autistic.

Miller’s Crossing is great but I always found the beautiful, sentimental music to be at odds with the film itself. Perhaps a weird thing to care about, but soundtrack and score weigh heavily in a film for me.

This may expose me as having poor taste in movies, but a couple of movies that I recently discovered that I really enjoyed are 2016s War on Everyone, and 1993s Beyond the Law. War on Everyone is a dark comedy, full of racist jokes, even though one of the protagonist is Michael Pena, a latino, and the other protagonist, Alex Skarsgard, is in a relationship with a black girl. Still the race based jokes are rapid fire and hilarious. Beyond the Law is totally serious, even though there were plenty of funny scenes. Charlie Sheen, on a dare, drives his motorcycle into a redneck bar and crashes it into a jukebox, all the patrons are basically stunned, Sheen gets off his bike, he has an unlit cigarette in his mouth, that was broken at some point in the stunt, and he looks around and says "Anyone got a light."

Anyway, I recommend these two films to the crowd, I think most will find it was time well spent. Would love to see Mystery Grove's take on either or both.

Listening to this episode and your stuff in general, I’d make the recommendation to watch the tv show “Tiger and Dragon”. It’s a Japanese tv show that ran for one season. It’s really good, it’s a lighthearted comedy about a yakuza who while trying to retrieve a debt was admired by his debtors rakugo comedy routine and agrees to be his student to pay off his debt. It gives a lot of mature life lessons and it’s very funny, great wit to the way people talk and the jokes always land.

I am now going to harass you in every way possible on this substack until you watch it! I have a gun and I’m going to kill every paid subscriber until you have no steady source of 5 dollars

Great film. Always disappointed Gabriel Byrne didn’t have a better career. Especially as a fellow Paddy! 🇮🇪
