I feel your pain. Nearly 40 years of trying to find the right way to eat. Then I found "Lean Health" by Paul Akers (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0990601021/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Well worth buying, about $15, and a easy read. No white sugar, no white flour, no preservatives, 80% vegetables and 20% protein. He says if it has two or more ingredients or wasn't from the ground or an animal, he won't eat it. He went from 250 lbs at age 55 to 165lbs in about one year's time. He's also physically active quite a bit.

After starting this lifestyle change, I am feeling so much better and losing weight. Doctor is pretty happy too!
