Hi folks,
It’s been a while. Lots of big content over the last few weeks. For paid subscribers exclusively there was a review of the new western Horizon (2024) as well as a (just dropped yesterday) retrospective on Bladerunner 2049, one of my favorite movies.
The biggest piece of content, by far, was my introduction to the Russian Revolution. I’ve written 5 articles on this topic that are designed to provide an outline of the Revolution and its aftermath to readers with no background knowledge at all.
It’s my hope that by having this kind of frame narrative, the documents I post on the Russian Civil War in the months to come will make a lot more sense. You’ll also get a lot more out of books like Always with Honor if you have a basic understanding of the complex situation in and history of Russia. Please, do this for me: Read the 5 articles. It only takes a very short amount of time. Everyone should know this story. I promise they will be of help to you. This stuff is extremely relevant to today.
I’ve been correcting mistakes and adding new footnotes (I just wrote a very long one expanding my explanation of what the Cossacks are) over the last few weeks, so if you already read the articles when they first went out via email, check them out again. You never know when you’ll notice something new. The articles are as follows:
Part 1: The February and October Revolutions
Part 2: Post-Revolution Russian politics/The aftermath of the October Revolution
Part 3: National and ethnic divisions within the Russian Empire/The Ice March
Part 4: Ukraine, Finland, and the Revolt of the Czechoslovak Legion/Regicide
Part 5: Disaster for Lenin/Enter Wrangel
And that’s all I’ve got. Working on a few writing projects now (I’m hoping to have summaries of the 1905 Russian Revolution and the 1918 German Civil War soon) and definitely will have a review of Alien: Romulus in the next week or so.
Paid subscribers, I sincerely am grateful for you. Thank you for your trust and support. The comments section on the Bladerunner 2049 episode really is great. It’s a pleasure interacting with you.
Free subscribers, if you’ve read this far down: You’re a lowlife. Fuck you, you disgust me. What’s wrong with you? The upgrade button is right below this. $5 a month, man. It’s not hard. You will NEVER get another podcast episode again, free-riding parasite. I’m going to archive the existing free episodes soon, too. You don’t deserve the good stuff and you won’t be getting it. Die.

I’m happy because I love you
You’re not even close to baseline.
German Civil War?!?!
Fantastic!
I hope you have time to look at Rosa Luxemburg, & whether or not her supposed resistance to armed rebellion was tactical, or genuine. Was her leadership in the Berlin revolt reluctant, or bold?
I think she opposed open revolt because she thought they’d lose, & not because she wasn’t going to destroy organized religion & kill every banker & landlord she could get her hands on. For starters.
I think once it happened, then she was all in, because they would either win or the top echelons would be executed.
Her execution was preceded by being dragged from her hotel room, shot in the head and then dumped in the river, & not a trial, but the result was the same.
Looking forward to it!
